The Whisky Lounge 2016

After several successful tastings in 2015, the team at The Whisky Lounge return to the Tap for a bumper 2016.

The Whisky Lounge is all about bringing whisky to the people through exciting and engaging events. Whether you are totally new to whisky, or further along in your journey, the Whisky Lounge is the place for you!

26th January – Burns Night

If you were to say Robert Burns’ birthday is just an excuse for us to break out the good stuff, we would say ‘No, no, no, no!’…and then we might soften a little and say, ‘well…maybe’.

The truth be told, is somewhere in-between, with a respectful nod to the Bard  but with the emphasis very much on the whisky aspect of the evening.

What you can be sure of is that we will be bringing some of our favourite drams and you can be sure we only drink the good stuff…

We’re also including an authentic and tasty half time supper of Haggis, neeps and tatties.

9th February – Guide To Whisky

Just about every whisky drinker you talk to can can remember the moment (or moments) that got them into whisky.

Whether it was a friend, relative or total stranger that first presented you with a glass of swirling liquid gold, there’s one thing we all have in common… We never looked back!

Whisky truly is the most amazing spirit in the world and we’re going to show you why. Even the most experienced whisky drinkers started out somewhere and that’s what this series is all about.

If you like whisky, have a burgeoning curiosity or want to refresh your knowledge then the TWL Guide To Whisky is perfect. We want to to set you off on the right foot and make sure you don’t get sucked into some kind of never-ending spiral of whisky myth, like, ahem… Bourbon isn’t whisky (it definitely is) Or peated whisky is peaty because of the water (it’s not) Or older whisky is always better (not the case).

16th February – Kavalan Vertical

For this series we’re sampling the delights of award winning Asian distiller Kavalan, in a nationwide series of tastings.

Kavalan emerged on the UK whisky scene in 2011 making their debut at our Manchester Whisky Festival. Since then they’ve been releasing some dynamite whiskies and scooping dozens of medals in spirit competitions both at home and abroad. They were even crowned best in the world in the 2015 World Whisky Awards. A title previously held by Japan.

Taiwan wouldn’t be the most obvious country for making an award winning malt whisky, but like Japan, Kavalan employ the same traditional whisky making methods as Scotland, and mirror beautifully the process of producing top notch malt whisky.

But are they really all that??? Well we’re going to let the whiskies do the talking and let you, the good whisky drinking public make up your own minds as to who deserves the number one spot.

8th March – Blending Workshop

Create your own blend!

It’s not all about the Malt Whisky here at The Whisky Lounge. We love ALL whisky, including (good) blended whisky.

Long ago we recognised, having dabbled in it ourselves, that blending is an art-form and is also a lot of fun.

You do not have to be a whisky expert, but you do have to come with an open mind and be prepared to apply both your palate and your brain as you construct your very own blended whisky.

You will be given the chance to try one or two classic blends to see where the benchmark lies before being let loose with your own set of whiskies and equipment.

You need to not only come up with your best possible blend, but also come up with an appropriate name for it. You will then bottle it into miniature, label it and take it home with you to proudly show it off to all and sundry!

More dates are TBC but rest assured they will be unmissable for all fans of the dram.
